Romans
8: 29, "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become
conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born
among many brethren:" Our image is going to become and
should now be the image of the living Son of God. Trust me
on this, nowhere in the Bible did Christ our Lord ever wear
a thong bathing suit or Speedo's or any other revealing and
unseemly clothes. When Christ was pierced it was not
through the nose or tongue or belly button. It says
that we as believers are to become the image of Christ. What
image is Christ then? II Corinthians 4: 4, ...in whose
case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving,
that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory
of Christ, who is the image of God." If we are the light
of the world then perhaps no one can see our light because
of the way we dress and the image we project. Perhaps
it is too weak an image, too weak a light for the world to
see. Christ did a lot of things, but one thing he did
not do was cast a weak image, or weak light. We are
to be the image of Christ who is the image of God. One
more reference as to the image we must conform too and we'll
move on. Colossians 1:14-15 "In whom we have
redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every
creature:" Image is very important.
Now we know what
our image should be. But one might say that what has
been said about the image of Christ is an internal image,
an internal way of being and we have said nothing about the
external way of being. So why don't we look at what
the Bible says about outward appearances.
Many years ago I
wore my hair long. We called ourselves hippie's back
in those ancient days. So let's start with long hair
since that is a form of rebellion that I am most familiar
with. The argument for long hair went something like
this. "Well Christ had long hair. All the paintings
of Jesus have Him with long hair." First of all, there
are no paintings or pictures of Christ. Every picture
that we see of Christ is from the renaissance period or there
about. That was about 1500 years after Christ ascended
into heaven. All of those who got a good look at Him
are dead and they left no pictures of our Lord. Men
who had long hair and accepted and expected men to wear their
hair long painted these pictures. Where did they get
this idea? It was mostly personal preference on their
part. As far as I have ever read there is only one physical
description of Christ in the whole Bible and that can be found
in Isaiah 53. I will quote the description and
you will see that the description does not describe His hair
cut. Isaiah 53:2, "For he shall grow up before
him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground:
he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him,
there is no beauty that we should desire him." That
says so much more than is read on the surface. Christ
was not born the most beautiful child ever born. When
he grew up he did not make the women in the village swoon
over his incredible good looks. As a matter of fact,
Isaiah is very clear that it will be His substance that will
attract men and women. It says very clearly in Isaiah
that He ain't gonna win no beauty contests. Herein lies
one of the greatest lessons that our young people can learn
about looks. If God Himself came to this earth and showed
us that physical appearance is not important enough for God
to give Himself the best looks, why then must we fuss with
our clothes, hair and makeup like it is of such importance.
Isaiah 53: 2b, "and when we shall see Him, there
is no beauty that we should desire Him."
